Can you reproduce the problem with the latest version (5.3p1) from openssh.com compiled from source? Are you using /etc/passwd as your user database, or something else (NIS, LDAP, etc.)? Please reopen if you can reproduce with a version that's a) recent and b) not modified by a vendor. If you want to stick with the version provided by SuSE then you'll need to seek help from them.
