Description Dan Hollis 2001-12-05 12:00:13 AEDT
When I try to ssh root@somemachine the connection is closed immediately:

% ssh root@server-1
Connection closed by x.x.x.x

I can ssh as normal non-root user just fine.

In the logs it says:

Dec 4 16:54:34 server-1 sshd[8070]: fatal: Received packet with bad string leng
th 1064303083

In /etc/ssh/sshd_config the "PermitRootLogin yes" is set, so thats not the
problem.

Both client and server are running openssh 3.0.2p1 with openssl 0.9.6a.

I searched FAQ and ML archives and google and couldn't find anything like this
problem.

Please send full client ("ssh -v -v -v") and server ("sshd -d -d -d") traces
