There has been quite a lot of talk about local echo (thus the birth of mosh). So I would a hybrid mode (which works with -t) were ssh will still open the terminal in raw mode, but will enable local echoing for printable characters. The moment a non printable character is encountered, the locally buffered text is sent to the remote pty, and whatever the response be, will be written by the ssh client replacing existing (locally echoed) text.
