When using the -3 option a "No such file or directory" error is not displayed as it is when using the same source and target without the -3 option. I expect to see an error message if the source does not exist. e.g. $ scp delays:DNE delays:/tmp/ DNE: No such file or directory $ scp -3 delays:DNE delays:/tmp/ $ With the -3 option, I get no indication that there was a failure other than exit value being nonzero.
